Coil is the operating system working tattooers run their day on. Built by one person, in conversation with the working tattooers actually using it. Here's what we believe and why it shows up in the product.
Belief 01
Most booking software funds itself by skimming the deposits, tips, or balances that should land in the tattooer's account. The default in our industry. Coil doesn't. The $100 deposit your client pays is $100 in your account. We charge a flat monthly fee for the software and that's the whole business model. Coil makes money when working tattooers think the tool is worth $29 a month. If it isn't, we don't deserve the seat.
Belief 02
The single most predictable thing about a tattooer's career is that they will eventually move chairs — to another shop, to solo, to a new city. Every other tool in the trade treats this as a problem. We treat it as the design center. Your URL at yourname.coil.tattoo stays yours. Your portfolio, your inquiry history, your deposits, your reviews, your waitlist all travel with you. If you bounce between shops every six months, your link doesn't change. That's the moat — for you, and for the shops that recruit you because they don't need to hold your career hostage to keep you on the roster.
Belief 03
The product surface is written by someone who's talked to working tattooers and listened. We say “tattooer,” not “tattoo artist.” We say “shop,” not “studio.” We don't use SaaS clichés — empower, elevate, unleash, transform, supercharge, seamless, robust, leverage, solution, platform-as-verb — because no working tattooer talks like that, and writing copy that doesn't sound like the trade is the cheapest way to lose trust. The voice on the marketing site is the same voice in the product.
Belief 04
We use AI for the things AI is good at — reading healing photos at 11pm, scoring inquiry style-fit against an artist's portfolio, suggesting quote ranges trained on the artist's own past jobs. We don't use AI to generate flash, fake portfolio shots, simulate tattoo work, or any marketing imagery. The trade is real human craft, and tools that pretend otherwise insult it. Every image on coil is real work by a real tattooer or it's typography. There is no third option.
Belief 05
The audience filter is explicit. Coil is for working tattooers and the shops that run them. Not for apprentices browsing the trade, not for permanent-makeup or brow-shaping operators, not for influencers who got a license last summer. The filter shows up in the inquiry form, the consent flow, the deposit math, the vocabulary on the dashboard. Trying to be everything for everyone is how you end up with hair-salon software with a tattoo skin.
Coil is built by a solo founder shipping the product day-by-day with working tattooers and shop owners in the loop. No VC, no growth team, no investor pressure to bolt on things the trade doesn't need. The pace shows up in the product — features ship when working tattooers tell us a real problem and we can solve it in a way that survives long-term use, not when a roadmap slide says they should.
