Lots of tattoo shops use it for in-person card swipes because the hardware works and the fees are predictable. None of that makes it a tattoo platform. When Square fits you better

If your shop's center of gravity is in-person card swipes (walk-in tattoos, flash days, merch sales, jewelry), Square's hardware + processing rates are dialed and easy. Their tap-to-pay phone-as-terminal feature alone is convenient. Use Square for what it actually is: a great payment processor. Just don't expect it to also sort your inquiries, run your aftercare, your consent flow, or your healed-photo collection, because it can't.

When coil is the right call

For everything that isn't the act of taking a card payment, coil is built and Square isn't. If you spend more time answering DMs, drawing custom pieces, sending healed-photo follow-ups, and dealing with 11pm healing questions than you do running cards at the counter, coil is the working tool for your week. Does Square charge a software fee?
Square Appointments has a free tier (single-user basic), Plus at $49/mo per location, and Premium at $149/mo per location as of September 2026. The bigger cost is processing fees on every transaction (2.6%+$0.10 in-person, 2.9%+$0.30 online, 3.5%+$0.15 keyed). coil's subscription ($59 solo, $49 a chair in a shop, chair 9 and up free) is flat with no platform cut on payments; Stripe still charges its own processing rate.
Can I use Square and coil together?
Yes. Many custom tattooers do exactly that: Square for the rare in-person card swipe and coil for site, inquiries, deposits via Stripe, aftercare, consent, and healed-photo collection. Square handles the counter; coil handles the day.
Does Square check healing photos?
