Square is a payment processor that also ships scheduling, invoicing, and a few small-business operations modules. Lots of tattoo shops use it for in-person card swipes because the hardware works and the fees are predictable. None of that makes it a tattoo platform. Square's inquiry form, intake, consent, aftercare, and review flow are all built for generic small businesses. Coil is built specifically for the working-tattooer day. If your shop runs heavy walk-ins and you primarily need to take card payments at the counter, Square is the right tool for that piece of the puzzle — but it's not running your business, it's running your register.
The honest read
Square is a payment processor.
Card terminals, invoicing, basic appointments. 2.6% + $0.10 in-person, 2.9% + $0.30 online, 3.5% + $0.15 manually keyed. Their hardware is good. Their tattoo-specific tooling is zero.
Coil is the tattoo operating system.
Qualified inquiries, two-stage drawing deposits, cancellation waitlist auto-fill, AI healing watch, healed-photo bounty, apprentice mode, portability moat. Flat-monthly with no cut on client payments.
Many shops use both.
Square at the counter for in-person card swipes; coil for everything else — site, inquiry, consent, aftercare, follow-up. The combination is common because each tool does what it's actually good at.

If your shop's center of gravity is in-person card swipes — walk-in tattoos, flash days, merch sales, jewelry — Square's hardware + processing rates are dialed and easy. Their tap-to-pay phone-as-terminal feature alone is convenient. Use Square for what it actually is: a great payment processor. Just don't expect it to also sort your inquiries, run your aftercare, your consent flow, or your healed-photo collection — because it can't.
When coil is the right call
For everything that isn't the act of taking a card payment, coil is built and Square isn't. If you spend more time answering DMs, drawing custom pieces, sending healed-photo follow-ups, and dealing with 11pm healing questions than you do running cards at the counter, coil is the working tool for your week. Most custom tattooers run both: Square for the rare in-person swipe, coil for everything before, during, and after the session.
